The Red-rumped Parrot, Psephotus haematonotus, also known as Grass Parakeet or Grassie, are slim and elegant birds for sale and owe their name to the bright red rump that males have on their back. In this parrot species, only the males are vividly colored – emerald-green plumage, yellow under-parts, blue highlights on the wings. The female’s plumage is much duller – dull-green wings, pale olive under-parts, blue-black on the wings. The Red-rumped Parrot is an ideal bird for the beginner, there is no experience needed and the noise level is low. They can be housed in breeding cages or aviaries. Red Rump Parakeets can tolerate low temperatures of 40 degrees if naturally acclimatized to it over a period of time but if they are suddenly removed for warmer temps and placed into cold climate they can become ill.
