The great blue Turaco is the largest Turaco in the world.
Description
The Great Blue Turaco is the largest in the world ranging from 70-75 cm in length. The body is bright blue and the wings of the Turaco are quite short and rounded. They have a stout body and a long tail. Both sexes are identical and their coloration doesn’t change throughout the year.
Habitat
They live in sub-Saharan Africa, the part of the continent below the Sahara Desert. This African bird is often found in the tops of tall forest trees. It is strictly Arboreal, which means tree-dwelling. The bird is a very poor flier but an extremely fine climber. It will hang upside down on tree limbs to reach its food at the end of the branches. Reproduction
The Great Blue Turaco normally lives in social groups of about 6-20 birds. A flimsy nest is built using twigs and the leaves of broadleaf plants in a tree or bush. Only the female incubates the eggs, but the male brings her food.
Diet
Although “musophaga” means banana and plantain eater, these birds hardly ever eat bananas or the tropical bananas called plantains. Instead, the birds eat the fruits of trees including the parasol and waterberry. The birds eat fruit that grows wild as well as fruit grown by people. Some species also eat flowers, leaves, caterpillars, moths, snails, slugs, termites, and beetles. Diet in Captivity: ripe fresh fruit, softbillmix, cucumber and nectar.
