I Want a Bird That Talks!

"I want a bird that talks" is probably one of the questions that I get most often. Rightly so, parrots are probably the only animal/pet that can mimic human voices and vocabulary. In fact, a basic google search will reveal the wonderful ability of parrots talking. Thousands of videos shows countless of birds mimicking their owners saying various funny phrases and even singing songs! This is, what I believe to be, the strongest magnet to the interest of keeping parrots as pets. In this article I will discuss how to properly choose a parrot and the reason why choosing a parrot for its ability to talk is usually not a good idea.

How To Choose A Parrot

Parrots are demanding in nature. They require a lot of attention, training and time. Choosing a parrot for its ability to talk may be a disaster in the near future for both the new owner and the bird. See, parrots are generally misunderstood to begin with. For example, birds do things like screaming and we humans don’t easily understand. They have a loud call and that is how they communicate with other birds. When we bring these pets to our home, we ask ourselves, why is this bird screaming like that? At first it may be cute but it gets old really quickly if you are not prepared for it.

The reason for choosing a parrot should not be for its ability to talk. After all, not all parrots will learn to talk. Imagine if you choose a baby parrot for its ability to talk, you raise the bird for many months and after all that hard work the bird decides that it will not learn to talk. There are parrots like the famous African Grey that never learn to talk. They simply choose to not talk and there is absolutely nothing that one can do to force a parrot to mimic human vocabulary. This being said: How do I choose a parrot for my family? To answer this question we must first answer a few basic questions:

  1. How much time do you have to dedicate to a bird? Birds require lifetime commitments as they can out live a Human. Some birds can live upward of 65+ years. This is a possession that will most likely be passed down to the next generation in your family.
  2. Do you live in a home or an Apartment? If you rent your home, it is important to ask for permission to keep a pet bird. Some landlords require a pet fee and they may need you to sign a pet clause. Also, know that most birds are too loud to own in an apartment. For example, i would strongly recommend that a Mollucan Cockatoo not be housed in an apartment where neighbors will hear the bird screaming. Also, make sure that the entire family is okay to have a bird that screams, squawks and is very messy.
  3. Can you financially afford it? The initial cost of a bird is a major expense. The bird, the cage, accessories and other supplies such as food can run in the high hundreds up to several thousands of dollars. On top of that, you have the ongoing costs that may be over a hundred dollars a month, depending the bird you choose. Lastly, remember veterinary check ups and if an emergency occurs, you must be prepared to do whatever is necessary for your pet. The birds life depends on you!!
  4. Do you have the patience for ongoing training? My philosophy is that anything with a mouth or a beak will bite at some point. Birds are no exception. You must be willing to deal with an occasional bite from your bird. That is their main defense mechanism. Training is an ongoing aspect of keeping pet birds. Relationship building is never finished or complete. Training may start with basic step up, to tricks, to teaching the bird to talk all the way to solving negative behaviors like getting bit, screaming, potty training, etc. Remember, pet birds are live animals. They are not a figurine that you put on a shelf to collect dust.
  5. Can you spend time researching and hands on experience? I recommend you join a bird club in your area, visit Bird pages or groups on Facebook, get to know different breeders, walk into your local pet store and talk to other people who own birds. Volunteer at a bird sanctuary or rescue, offer a breeder a helping hand. Get involved with birds prior to getting one so that you know what you’re getting yourself into.

In conclusion, choosing a bird is a lifetime decision that cannot be made by a parrot’s ability to talk. It is a major decision that will change your daily routine, and the way you live. It is imperative that you think about this carefully and purposely to ensure you are doing the right thing for you and your potential pet bird.

Do Cockatiels make good first pet birds?

Cockatiels make great first birds. These beautiful, intelligent and loving birds are a great beginner bird for various reasons that we will discuss in this article. Even though we classify cockatiels as a beginner bird, we must understand that they still require a great deal of attention, time and they can also be costly. If you have not yet read our article "I Want a Bird That Talks", please do so as I explain the proper way to choose the right bird in detail.

Why do Cockatiels make such great pets?

Cockatiels are arguably one of the most common pet birds in the United States. They are a small to medium sized bird that have captured the hearts of many people. They are relatively easy to keep and can be enjoyed by the whole family!

Highlight:

Male cockatiels can have a great vocabulary and can whistle several melodies. Males tend to do all the singing, chattering and talking in order to impress the female (or owner). It is important to note that usually only males perform these behaviors although some females have been observed.

Here are the reasons we believe Cockatiels make great pets:

  1. Perfect Size. These birds are not too small or too big to manage. They are between a small to medium sized hookbill. Their size makes it great for a small home or apartment.
  2. Relatively Quiet. Compared to other similar sized birds like the Quaker Parrot or Conures, Cockatiels are relatively quiet birds. Males have a louder call and whistle to impress it's mate however, it is manageable and one bird will not cause a disturbance.
  3. Social in Nature. Cockatiels are very curious and hand fed birds are very friendly to their owners and the entire family. Hand fed birds love to be petted, scratched, touched and interact with other humans. These birds are gentle enough to be around supervised small children and humans at an advanced age. Cockatiel can be a very loving pet.
  4. Beautiful Bird. Cockatiels are elegant and classy. If you look at a good specimen that is healthy and well cared for, you cannot help but notice the elegance these birds carry in themselves. They are clean looking birds and pleasing to the eye.
  5. Easy to find. Cockatiels can be easy to find at a reasonable price of under $300 depending on the mutation color you choose. Average price of a cockatiel at the time of writing (Fall 2021), is roughly between $125 - $200. Some rarer mutations such as the emerald mutation can cost as high as $400. Needless to say, these prices are a lot more affordable than other similar medium sized parrots that can cost over $800.

All in all, we believe that cockatiels are excellent pets for a beginner parrot owner who wants a friendly, elegant looking hookbill for the entire family to enjoy for many years to come.

My Bird Loves French Fries, What should I Do?

I received a question from one of our awesome customers the other day asking if French Fries were okay to give to her pet African Grey. While one French fry will not immediately harm the bird, there are much better choices of treats to give to a bird that would be enjoyed without compromising the birds health in any way. In this article, I will discuss bird nutrition, give a few recommendations, choices of bird foods, treats and healthy munchies that your bird will enjoy.

Why is Bird Nutrition Important?

Parrots live a VERY long life. Some parrots live upward of the one-hundred-years and to support such a long lifespan, it is imperative that we provide the very best nutrition possible to ensure a healthy long life for the bird. In fact, it is our absolute responsibility to give the bird the nutrition they need if we are to maintain the bird in captivity and our care. It is the very least we can do for the bird since we are enjoying its presence in our home. Normally, birds would go in the wild and have a variety of native plants, fruits, veggies and grains to choose from. They also find nuts, bugs, insects, bark, plant nectar, tree sap, mineral soil, and other variety of foods to maintain their health and well being. All of this being said, we must do everything in our power to mimic this in captivity with nutrient rich variety of foods offered to our pet birds.

If you look at the nutritional chart for humans, we see Starches, Fruits and Vegies, Proteins and Oils/Fats. We can guide ourselves with that for our pet birds but we must keep in mind that birds are not humans and have different dietary needs. Here are a few factors to keep in mind:

  1. What type of bird is it? The type of bird, where it comes from and what they eat in the wild is extremely important to keep in mind when choosing a bird diet for pet birds that we keep in captivity. In fact, this is probably the best guide to follow. A parrot from central America will most likely not be eating strawberries and apples in the wild. Although it may not harm them to eat it in captivity, we should try to emulate what these birds are accustomed to eating in their native place. One food source is not a good idea. I have seen many people feed seed and only seed to a Quaker parrot for its entire life. Although a good quality cockatiel seed mix may be nourishing, birds should eat a variety of foods which should include different types of seeds, pellets, treats, some fruits and veggies and other supplemental foods. Even the best premium and balanced cockatiel seed mix will be deficient on calcium, amino acids and certain vitamins like vitamin A. On the contrary to that, a pellet only diet is not recommended for several reasons. First, it is psychologically unhealthy for the bird to be fed the same brown pellets every single day, year after year. Birds love foraging and doing this would tremendously alter the birds natural behavior which can lead to other issues. Also, there are oils that may not be found in the pellet diet that can be found on seeds. Lastly, not all pellets are created equal. Choose pellets that are high quality ingredients, consistent and easy to find everywhere you go. The last thing you need is to run out of the pellet food and not be able to quickly find your birds food. I recommend a 70% pelleted diet such as Kaytee or Zupreem, 20% of a good quality fresh seeds such as Independent's Choice Feed, and 10% of Fruits and Veggies. Table foods are okay, but.... be extremely careful on what you feed your birds. Birds digestive track is extremely sensitive and things like lactose can be detrimental for a birds health. A lot of our people foods are made with several ingredients that may be harmful to birds that we may not think of. Let's take for example, a drink such as coffee, soda or even a fruit juice. Caffeine and sugar are two ingredients that can harm a birds health. While it may not be noticeable at the moment of ingestion, it may be the cause of heart failure in the future. Parrots have a heart rate over 250 beats per minute and giving caffeine to a bird will elevate their heart rate to dangerous levels causing harm to the birds delicate heart and eventually being the cause of heart disease. These are things we do not see immediately but unknowingly can cause problems in the future. If you must give a bird people foods, choose foods that are low in sugar, fats and sodium. Ensure that the foods you are giving contain no artificial ingredients and offer only in very small amounts.

In my own breeding program and aviary, I feed 70% Zupreem Fruitblend Diet, 20% High Quality of seeds such as Independent's Choice Feed, 7% fresh veggies and fruits and 3% treats such as monkey chow and some nuts such as palm nuts.

In conclusion, nutrition is a must for a birds health. Special attention must be given to ensure the bird lives a long and healthiest possible life. It is our responsibility to ensure we know the types of foods that the birds would eat in their natural habitat and match those dietary needs to the best of our abilities. It is our duty to treat our birds in the most humane possible way in providing a variety of foods and to protect our birds from having secondary effects by being careful on the foods we provide. Remember, these birds did not ask to be in our homes. We brought them to enrich our lives. We have a responsibility to care for them to the fullest extent possible.

Getting a New Pet Bird: A Beginner’s Guide

Bringing a new pet bird into your home can be a rewarding experience. To some, exotic birds and parrots call their attention by the rainbow of colored feathers, ability to talk or simply their inquisitive personalities that make parrots an incredible pet to own. But, before we dig into what a new pet needs to live a happy, healthy life, it is important to talk about things to consider before you actually obtain a new bird.

Remember, there are more than 10,000 different species of birds. It is extremely important to choose wisely because birds range in size, small like a parakeet to a large birds like macaws. Some are very quiet like a parrotlet Vs. very loud like a cockatoo. Some require a high quality seed diet that is easily accessible vs. others require nectar or fresh foods that may be a challenge for the average family to provide multiple times a day. So, bottom line: It is imperative that careful consideration is given when choosing the right bird for you and your family.

Now, to the main topic for this post. To ensure your new feathered friend is happy and healthy, here are the basics you need to know:

1. Cage Size

Choose a cage that provides ample space for your bird to move around, stretch its wings, and play. The cage should be large enough to accommodate perches, toys, and food and water dishes without the bird touching any bird cage components.

2. Food

Provide your bird with a balanced diet that includes a variety of seeds, pellets, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Make sure to research the specific dietary needs of your bird species.

3. Toys

Offer a variety of toys to keep your bird mentally stimulated and physically active. Toys like swings, bells, and puzzles can help prevent boredom and encourage natural behaviors. This is extremely important because the bird will be spending most of it's life in the cage.

4. Supplements

Consult with a veterinarian to determine if your bird requires any additional supplements to maintain optimal health. Common supplements include calcium and vitamin D3.

5. Supplies

  • Perches of various sizes and textures to help the birds feet exercise
  • Food and water dishes that are easy to clean such as ceramic or stainless steel
  • Cage liners or bedding such as pine pellets or unscented paper pellets
  • Grooming supplies (such as nail clippers and a bird-safe shampoo)
  • First aid kit for birds

By providing the right environment, diet, and care, you can ensure that your new pet bird thrives in its new home. Remember to give your bird plenty of attention, love, and social interaction to build a strong bond and create a happy, healthy relationship.

Factors to Consider Before Buying a Baby Parrot

Embarking on the journey of parrot parenthood is thrilling, but before you do, it's critical to ponder several key factors. These considerations will ensure that your decision to buy a baby parrot is well-informed and that you're prepared for the responsibilities that come with caring for these complex animals.

Type of Parrot

Parrots are an incredibly diverse group, with over 350 species, each with its own unique traits and requirements. Knowing which type is the right match for your lifestyle is the first step in responsible parrot ownership.

Understanding Species-Specific Needs

Some parrots, like African Greys, are known for their intelligence and may require mental stimulation through toys and puzzles. Others, such as the Cockatoo, form deep bonds with their owners and need substantial emotional interaction. This is why it is important to research each bird that you are considering prior to purchase to ensure you can meet the birds needs.

Size and Lifespan Considerations

Larger parrots typically have longer lifespans, sometimes outliving their owners, while smaller species may have shorter lifespans but still require a considerable commitment. Small parrots and parakeets live between 7-15 years. Medium parrots like conures can live 25+ years and large macaws can live 45+ years.

Noise and Socialization

Certain parrots are naturally more vocal, which might be a problem in noise-sensitive living environments.  For example, a Moluccan Cockatoo is not suitable for an apartment. Additionally, social species will require more of your time and attention to thrive.

Budget

The financial aspect of parrot ownership extends far beyond the initial purchase price. It encompasses ongoing costs such as food, healthcare, and enrichment. Depending on the bird you are purchasing, budget between several hundred dollars to several thousands.

Initial Costs

Prices for baby parrots vary widely, influenced by species rarity, availability, demand, coloration and breeder reputation. Remember, not all birds are created equal. Ensure you obtain a baby bird from a reputable breeder that stands behind their birds. This may cost you a bit more but you will ensure you are getting a quality bird. Also, factor in the initial investment needed for a proper cage, accessories, and initial veterinary visits.

Long-Term Care Expenses

Veterinarians caring for a bird

Ongoing costs include a nutritious diet, routine vet check-ups, and replacing toys and perches. These can add up, so ensure you're ready for the financial commitment. These things can add up quickly and although birds rarely get sick, it is important to note that we are prepared for these unexpected large expenses.

Experience with Birds

Your level of experience with avian pets can greatly influence the type of parrot that is best for you. There are species such as Indian Ringnecks and Macaws who require an experienced bird handler to manage them. This is why it is important to know what type of bird you are getting before you actually purchase one. At Novanbirds.com we are more than happy to help you in this journey.

Beginner-Friendly Species

If you're new to bird ownership, consider species known for being easier to care for, such as budgerigars or Parakeets, lovebirds, cockatiels and small conures which are a great beginner bird, more forgiving and less demanding. Don’t get me wrong, these smaller birds still require work, handling, training and dedication. But, they are easier to maintain than let’s say, a macaw or a Congo African Gray. Out of all the domestic birds that www.Novanbirds.com carries, hand fed baby cockatiels are my number one recommendation for beginner bird owners.

Training and Handling

Some parrots require more experience to handle and train properly, especially larger species that can develop behavioral issues if not managed correctly. There was a study made by the University of Pennsylvania and Charleston Animal Society where researchers looked at over 24,000 adoption records and the study showed that behavior problems were the leading cause of why pets end up in the shelters or rescues. Although most of these were dogs and cats, the same is true for exotic birds. Conclusion to this; a well-trained bird is the best way to ensure you enjoy your new feathered pet for years to come.

Support and Resources

Identify local avian veterinaries is extremely important to do before you obtain the bird. You do not want an emergency to happen to then start searching for that avian vet. Remember, not all vets are bird specialists. Bird clubs offer an immense area of support with other experienced bird people. Some online resources can offer support and advice as you navigate the world of parrot care however, it is imperative that you vet them well because some online sources are not reliable sources of information. Sometimes, advice given online contradicts what avian experts recommend. This is why it is strongly recommended that you only seek advice from reputable online sources.

Flighty and Feisty: Coping with Bird Biting Behavior

If you're dealing with bird biting or flighty behavior, CP Birds offers practical advice on managing this issue effectively. Read below.

My bird is biting and it's flighty. What do I do? This is a common question I get from new bird owners. Similar to human toddlers, baby birds often test their limits, and it's essential to correct and train them to discourage undesirable behavior and encourage positive behavior.

Baby Birds that Do Not Bite Parrots
Scarlet Macaw

If your bird is biting and appears flighty, there are several steps you can take.

Observe their body language for signs of aggression or fear and respond accordingly. Use positive reinforcement to reward good behavior. Avoid forcing your bird into actions they resist and consider their health and environment to ensure they are not acting out due to discomfort or illness. For flight training, start with basic commands and gradually increase the complexity as your bird learns. Patience and consistency are key in training your bird.

Here are some effective strategies to address your bird's flightiness and biting behavior. Establish a positive bond by spending quality time with your bird, respecting their space, and observing their body language for signs of discomfort. Avoid forcing interaction, and instead use positive reinforcement to encourage desired behaviors. Ensure your bird's environment is enriching and that they are in good health to prevent stress-related biting.

Tip #1 - Establish positive relationship

Firstly, foster a positive relationship with your bird by spending time together, providing mental stimulation, and respecting their space. It's important to acknowledge that birds are expected to adjust to our environment, not the other way around. As such, it's vital to understand that everything they encounter is new to them. Even if their cage is shiny and appealing, it represents an unfamiliar environment. The food they eat, the people who become their family, the sounds, and the smells are all novel. With so many changes, it's natural for them to feel anxious and cautious.

Begin gradually. Speak to the bird softly, refrain from making abrupt movements, and offer treats from outside the cage during the initial days.

Tip #2 - Observe their body language

Observe their body language for signs of aggression or fear and respond accordingly. Use positive reinforcement to reward good behavior. Give the bird treats when new the bird gets closer. Reward the bird with positive verbal sounds and soft-spoken words. Avoid forcing your bird into actions they resist and consider the bond and the trust you are trying to build.

Birds are intriguing creatures; they possess their own forms of communication, yet they can also learn ours. – Charlie Plaza

Tip #3 - Establish a routine

Establishing a routine for training and interaction, along with abundant positive reinforcement, is crucial for bird training. Consistency is the cornerstone of success in this endeavor. Inconsistent treatment almost certainly guarantees failure. Success requires time, patience, dedication, and perseverance, even in the face of apparent setbacks. Commitment is essential. The rewards of having a well-behaved bird are immense, and the sacrifices made will seem worthwhile when others inquire about your method.

Tip #4 - Flightiness is a sign of distrust

Flightiness in birds is often a manifestation of distrust. A bird may attempt to flee from you or its current environment. If escape is not possible, it may resort to biting as a means to gain freedom. The key to addressing flightiness is to socialize the bird and build trust. Increased exposure to various situations can enhance their sense of security, diminishing the impulse to flee. Consistent practice is essential until the desired outcome is attained. While some birds, particularly the younger ones, will inevitably undergo this phase,

others may scarcely exhibit such behavior.

It is a natural aspect of avian companionship.

Tip #5 - A baby bird biting may be temporary

A hand-fed, socialized baby bird may nip and bite during its early adolescent stage. Biting is a natural behavior we aim to discourage, similar to how young children learn to claim "mine" and not share their toys. To address biting in birds, it's crucial to establish a bond and communicate that biting is undesirable. This can be accomplished in several ways:

1. Maintain eye contact when handling a bird, signaling your control.

2. Never place a bird on your shoulder, as it suggests to the bird that it has control, potentially leading to dominant and aggressive behavior.

3. Understand that a bird uses its beak to step up; a beak on your finger doesn't necessarily mean a bite is imminent.

4. Approach the bird from the abdominal area, avoiding reaching from above the head or from behind.

5. Remain calm. Overreacting to a bite can encourage the bird to seek such attention.

6. If a bite is too forceful, firmly say "no," place the bird on the floor safely, and walk away. This teaches the bird that biting results in isolation and loss of interaction.

7. Never use the birdcage as punishment. It should be a comfortable, happy, and safe space for the bird.

Conclusion: A bit of training will go a long way

In conclusion, a little training can make a significant difference. It revolves around building a relationship, establishing trust, and setting boundaries for acceptable behavior. Developing this bond and understanding with your bird will take time. Keep in mind that birds have beaks and biting is a natural behavior. You may get bitten, but the important thing is to observe the behavior, respond correctly, and avoid encouraging it. Guide to “Buying” Parrot Fertile Eggs Online

Fertile parrot eggs are highly sought after, with thousands seeking to purchase them daily. A simple Google search reveals numerous ads, websites, and posts on the subject. Yet, it's crucial to recognize that parrots are not like chickens that lay eggs daily. If that were so, parrots would be as common and affordable as chickens. This article will discuss purchasing parrot eggs online. Please ensure you read entire article!

The phrase "African Grey Parrot Eggs For Sale" ranks among the top searches for parrot eggs on Google. A report from the search engine optimization company Semrush.com indicates that this keyword, along with related terms, is searched for more than 2,000 times a month in the USA alone. This suggests that daily, more than 67 individuals in the United States are seeking to purchase "Parrot Fertile Eggs" online.

Let's take a brief look at the efforts of parrot breeding and why hatching eggs are in such popular demand.

Parrots are an exotic and captivating choice for a pet, with their vibrant colors and ability to mimic human speech contributing to their high demand and cost. The difficulty in breeding parrots exacerbates the supply and demand issue. Consequently, a more economical "alternative" to the steep price of acquiring a baby parrot is to purchase fertile parrot eggs and incubate them at home. This is the reason many individuals opt for this method as a means to reduce the costs associated with acquiring a baby parrot by incubating the eggs at home... or is it really?

Fertile Bird Eggs For SaleParrot Eggs often displayed on a Parrot Eggs For Sale Ad

The challenge with parrots is that they may lay only two eggs per clutch, once or twice a year, without assurance of fertility or hatching. In contrast to chickens, parrots have a specific breeding season during which they lay eggs, nurture, and raise their young. While baby chickens are self-sufficient from hatching, parrot chicks rely on their parents for nourishment for months, if not years, until they achieve independence. Consequently, successfully hatching an egg and raising a parrot chick at home is quite demanding.

Bird and parrot breeders invest thousands of dollars in their breeding stock, dedicate countless hours to working with their birds, and allocate even more resources to ensure their birds are healthy and content before they breed, lay eggs, incubate them, hatch their young, and eventually, wean them from the nest. Typically, breeders remove the young chicks from the nest at a very young age and hand-feed them before their eyes have even opened. This process fosters a bond between the chick and humans, resulting in an exceptionally friendly pet parrot.

All this to say that reputable breeders will never sell parrot hatching eggs online. If you find a breeder in the United States of America selling hatching parrot eggs online, it is absolutely, without hesitation, a scam. Period.

Now that I have killed the elephant in the room, I would like to take a look at a few other topics around the Hatching, Fertile Parrot Eggs Scam.

For my research, as I was writing this article, I conducted a simple Google search and discovered several advertisements, including paid or "sponsored" ones that I wish to display here. Upon closer inspection, it's evident that advertisers employ tactics to present themselves as legitimate businesses. For instance:

  1. Incorporating keywords into a business name, such as 'Parrot Farm', 'Exotic Parrots', or 'Quality Eggs', can
significantly enhance visibility and searchability for a company.Reviews have been incorporated into the advertisement. Five-star reviews with comments tend to increase buyer comfort. Although these reviews are fabricated, they enhance the advertisement's appeal and people are more likely to "buy".The advertisement has been enhanced with valuable information. For instance, it states that the eggs should hatch in 18 days; however, African Grey eggs actually take 28 days to hatch—a fact not commonly known by the average consumer. The ad appears credible, informative, and engaging.

4. Google provides a list of various outlets, more search options, and may suggest websites that have not been verified as legitimate.

5. Websites often provide instructions on how to hatch eggs, care for chicks, and even create a sustainable, cash- generating business that can support your livelihood. This adds to the emotional power that clouds people's perception and judgement.

In conclusion, purchasing parrot eggs online is a complete scam that the public needs to be aware of. I often receive inquiries from people who wish to buy hatching eggs online and ask if I sell them. My response is always a no. Despite this, they persist, and some even become upset when they cannot buy eggs from me. Regrettably, numerous websites falsely advertise the sale of parrot eggs, making it all too easy to fall into the trap, send money, and end up defrauded. You should never send money to anyone for hatching or fertile parrot eggs.

I hope that by writing this article, I can prevent at least one person from sending money to a scammer for parrot eggs.

Additionally, spreading the word about this article can help raise awareness of this fraudulent scheme. So, please share this as many times as possible to prevent another person from getting scammed.

How to Guide: Hand Feeding Baby Birds

Hand-feeding baby birds is a specialized skill that should be learned under the guidance of an experienced aviculturist before attempting it alone. It is crucial to recognize that baby birds are living creatures that require the utmost care and respect. The process of hand-feeding is critical, as the bird's life hinges on the precise execution of these specific instructions. These young birds are highly delicate, and improper handling can lead to death within seconds.

Below you'll find the main points discussed in this article. At the end of the article, you'll find videos showing everything listed on this article.

Main Points:

  1. Before you start: Understand the time commitment of up to every 2 hours around the clock for several weeks.
  2. When to Start Hand Feeding: Optimal age to start hand feeding is between 2-3 weeks of age depending on the species.
  3. How often to feed: The feeding schedule is dependent on the type of bird but as a general rule, we want to stay consistent as soon as the crop empties, we refill it.
  4. How much to feed: Usually, we want to feed the baby about 10% of the body weight in formula. You do not want to feed too little that the bird does not get what it needs or too much that will overly stretch the crop and cause issues. The crop should feel like a soft balloon filled with water.
  5. What to feed: I usually recommend to feed a commercially available formula such as Kaytee Exact, Hagen Hari Tropican or Psittacus hand rearing formula.
  6. What utensils to use: I recommend using a syringe with a soft tip to avoid puncturing the baby's delicate esophagus or air sacs.
  7. How to prepare the formula: The formula should be mixed with hot water above 115 degrees Farenheit (F) and then let coll down to 110 degrees F and fed to bird between 104 - 110 degrees F. Consistency of the formula should be on the thicker side of runny apple sauce.
  8. How to feed baby: The syringe should always be placed on the left side of the birds beak pointing downwards towards the right touching the side of the birds beak forcing a feeding jerking reaction. Then, slowly, begin feeding the baby.
Baby Hand Fed Parakeet

Before you start hand feeding a baby parrot

Before you commit to hand feeding a baby bird, make sure that you understand the amount of work, time consumption (as often as every 2 hours around the clock) and high level of risk that you are undertaking. Feeding a baby bird is not easy and it needs to be left for the professionals and highly trained individuals. But, if you choose to take this on, you must commit and be willing to invest time, work and money should something go wrong, and the bird needs medical attention.

Starting Hand-Feeding process

I recommend initiating hand-feeding of chicks at 2-3 weeks old, depending on the species. Beginning sooner provides no advantage while their eyes remain closed. It's actually better to keep the chicks with their parents during this delicate phase. Additionally, there are health benefits to allowing them to build antibodies from the parent's crop milk while being fed. When they are 2-3 weeks old and their eyes start to open, that's the appropriate time to begin hand-feeding.

Starting hand-feeding process and how often

The basic guideline is to ensure the crop is completely empty before feeding the baby bird. At three weeks old, the baby should be fed every four to six hours, totaling five to six feedings per day. The frequency may vary with different species, but it's crucial not to let the crop remain empty for extended periods, as this can weaken the baby. Additionally, always allow the crop to empty before the next feeding; never refill the crop if it still contains food, as this can lead to spoilage.

How much to feed

Adhering to the manufacturer's guide and instructions is crucial when feeding baby birds. Generally, feeding them 10-12% of their body weight in grams is advisable. For instance, a baby bird weighing 150 grams should be fed 15 cc's of formula. Please be aware that underfeeding will require more frequent feedings. Overfeeding, on the other hand, can overextend the crop's elasticity, preventing it from contracting properly to empty. Should this occur, it is critical to seek veterinary care promptly to avoid further complications.

What to feed baby birds

I recommend using commercially available hand-feeding formulas such as Kaytee Exact, Hagen Hari Tropican, or Psittacus Hand Rearing Formula. These have been proven to yield excellent results in the health and growth rate of baby birds, eliminating any guesswork or room for error. I have used Kaytee Exact and Hagen Hari Tropican for years and have encountered no issues.

What utensils to use to hand feed baby birds

I firmly believe that a syringe with a soft tip is the ideal tool for hand-feeding. It not only allows you to control the feeding pace and contain the formula, but it also makes it easy for the baby bird to eat safely. While some people opt for a bent spoon, a sharp plastic syringe, a crop feeding tube, or other tools, I don't use them, even though they have their advantages. For instance, spoon-feeding can foster a stronger bond between the bird and its owner, as it emulates the natural feeding response from the bird's parents. However, this method can be quite messy, leading to spilled formula on the bird's face, feathers, and surroundings, which can promote bacterial growth and other potential problems. Additionally, spoon-feeding is a slower process, which may cause the formula to cool, posing further challenges.

How to prepare the formula for baby parrots

Again, I believe you should follow the manufacturer's instructions. I usually heat water in the microwave to about 120 degrees Fahrenheit. I add the powdered formula in the hot water and stir until a bit thicker than runny apple sauce. Then, I use a thermometer to stir the formula to ensure there are no hot pockets and let it cool down to 110 degrees Fahrenheit before feeding the baby bird. If the formula is too cold, it can prevent the crop from starting the digestion process and if it's too hot, it will burn the delicate lining of the crop.

How to feed baby birds

Hand feeding Sun Conures and baby lovebird

Position the syringe to the left side of the bird's beak, angling it downwards towards the right and making contact with the side of the beak to induce a feeding response. Proceed to feed the baby bird gently. It is crucial not to force the baby bird to swallow the formula. Allow the baby to display the head bobbing jerking motion, signaling it is ready to feed. Care must be taken to avoid aspiration, which can lead to respiratory infection or, in severe cases, the death of the baby bird.

In these videos, I show you step by step from making the formula to feeding the baby birds. Let me know in the comments your thoughts.

Sociable Creatures

One of the most endearing qualities of birds is their sociability. They thrive on interaction and bond deeply with their human companions. Whether you have children or are just a big kid at heart, birds make wonderful companions for individuals of all ages. Their ability to form strong connections with humans is truly heartwarming.

Apartment-Friendly Pets

Living in a small space like an apartment should not deter you from embracing the joys of pet ownership. Birds are perfectly suited for apartment living, requiring minimal space compared to other traditional pets. Their compact size and affinity for indoor environments make them an ideal choice for individuals residing in apartments or condos. Just be careful on the type of bird you acquire because some can be a bit too loud for an apartment.

Intelligence and Curiosity

Birds are incredibly intelligent creatures with a knack for learning and problem-solving. From mimicking sounds to mastering tricks, these feathered friends never fail to impress with their cognitive abilities. Engaging with a bird will not only keep you entertained but also stimulate their keen intellect, fostering a dynamic and fulfilling relationship. Some birds can mimic human language and even associate some words with actions. For example: The doorbell rings and the bird immediately says Who's there? They are so much fun!! :)

Embracing Birds as Family Members

Birds in Nature

As you embark on this avian adventure, it's essential to create a nurturing environment that caters to your bird's unique needs. Here are some tips to ensure a harmonious relationship with your new feathered family member:

  • Provide Enrichment : Birds thrive on mental stimulation and physical activity. Offer a variety of toys, puzzles, and perches to keep them entertained and engaged.
  • Healthy Diet : A balanced diet is crucial for your bird's well-being. Consult a veterinarian or avian specialist to determine the best nutritional plan for your specific bird species. Here at Novanbirds.com, we feed Higgins Vita Seed and Roudybush Maintenance Pelleted Diets.
  • Regular Vet Check-ups : Just like any other pet, birds require routine veterinary care to ensure they are healthy and happy. Schedule regular check-ups to monitor their health and address any concerns. At the very least, once a year is recommended. Be sure to choose an avian veterinarian as they specialize in birds.
  • Bonding Time : Dedicate quality time each day to interact with your bird. Whether it's singing, talking, or simply being present, cultivating a strong bond will deepen your relationship. I strongly recommend at least an hour a day at a minimum but if you can strive for 2-3 hours of interaction every day.

The State of Aviculture in 2025: Bird Breeding Economic Impacts and Regulatory Changes

As we enter 2025, the aviculture industry faces a dynamic landscape shaped by economic conditions, new regulations, and potential tariffs. Here’s a look at what to expect in the coming year and how these factors might influence bird prices and the cost of supplies.

Economic Factors Affecting Bird Prices

The state of the economy plays a significant role in the aviculture industry. In 2025, the U.S. economy is projected to experience moderate growth, with real GDP expected to increase by around 1.9%. However, inflation and potential increases in tariffs on imports could lead to higher costs for bird feed, supplies, and veterinary care. These increased costs may be passed on to consumers, resulting in higher bird prices.

Breeders might need to rethink their pricing strategies to adapt to these shifts. Furthermore, the delicate state of the economy could influence consumer spending, which may, in turn, affect the demand for exotic birds and related products. Let’s delve deeper into this topic:

New USDA Federal Regulations

Laws on bird breeding

The USDA announced several new regulations in 2024 that will impact the aviculture industry in 2025. These include changes to inspection and certification fees for bird breeders and others in the industry. While these regulations primarily affect large breeders, they highlight the USDA’s ongoing efforts to regulate aviculture,

and I anticipate it reaching the smaller breeders in the coming years.

For aviculturists, staying informed about these regulations is crucial. Compliance with federal guidelines helps maintain high standards of care and breeding practices, ensuring the health and well-being of birds. Needless to say, ignoring these regulations, even out of ignorance can be costly in legal fees and fines and eventually costing breeders their ability to legally own and operate in the United States.

Local Regulations

In addition to federal regulations, local laws can also impact the aviculture industry. For example, new laws in Florida taking effect in 2025 include amendments to building codes, including permanent aviaries and restrictions on social media use for children can have a significant shift in the aviculture landscape. While these laws may not directly affect bird breeding, they reflect the broader regulatory environment for breeders that sell to the public must navigate. Also, children often influence their parents' decisions to obtain pet birds. However, the strict community standards for social media platforms against breeders and the constant pressure from animal rights activists may hinder the ability of breeders to advertise on social media, causing an even bigger challenge for breeders selling their birds to the public.

Local regulations can vary significantly by state and municipality, so it’s essential for breeders to stay updated on any changes that could affect their operations.

Potential Tariffs and Their Impact

Tariffs are another critical factor that could influence the aviculture industry in 2025. Higher tariffs on imports from key trading partners, such as China, Canada, and Mexico, are expected. These tariffs could increase the cost of imported goods, including bird cages, food, and other supplies essential for breeding and raising birds.

Growing Bird Seed

Breeders may need to explore alternative suppliers or adjust their budgets to account for these higher costs. Diversifying supply chains and planning for potential price increases can help mitigate the impact of tariffs on their operations. However, no matter how much we can mitigate the rising costs and the expense of breeding birds, ultimately, these costs would have to be factored into the baby birds being sold, thus increasing bird prices.

Fuel, Labor and Energy Costs

I recently spoke with the CEO of a major bird feed producer in the United States, and he shared an insightful point worth discussing. He mentioned that feed costs sourced and produced in the USA might remain stable or see only a minimal increase in price. This is because all the seed we will consume in 2025 has already been produced and stored in 2024, meaning this year’s factors won’t impact prices significantly. He also noted, "anyone can buy and transport a 50lb bag of bird seed but when you request 300,000 pounds of sunflower seeds, it complicates things". The complexity arises from the need of lots of people (labor), a lot of transport (fuel), and a large amount of space (storage) to produce the final product for consumers, including breeders and pet stores.

As the new administration takes office, they have pledged to boost USA fuel production, which should help lower fuel and energy prices. Additionally, lower taxes will help offset other costs, providing breeders with some relief to counteract increases in other areas.

Rainbow Lorikeet Breeding
Rainbow Lorikeet

Conclusion

The aviculture industry in 2025 will be influenced by a mix of economic conditions, regulatory changes, and potential tariffs. I foresee two competing forces at play. While the future remains uncertain, we can already observe signs of tightening within the aviculture sector.

On one hand, new regulations affecting breeders, rising prices for goods and veterinary services, and a reduced supply due to smaller breeders going out of business could drive bird prices higher. On the other hand, a stronger economy with lower taxes, reduced fuel and energy costs, and decreased demand for pet birds due to economic challenges like inflation, combined with difficulties in advertising pet birds on social media, may help stabilize prices and regulate the market.

Breeders must stay informed and adaptable to navigate these challenges successfully. By focusing on compliance, exploring cost-saving measures, and maintaining high standards of care, the aviculture community can continue to thrive and provide healthy, well-cared-for birds to enthusiasts and pet owners alike.

Feel free to share your thoughts or ask any questions in the comments below. Happy 2025 breeding season!
