The Parson Finch (Poephila cincta), also known as the Black throated Finch has a black beak, grey head and brown body color. They are graceful, fast flyers and suitable for both beginner and advanced bird enthusiasts. Parsons Finches for sale are stunning Australian finches with a very peaceful nature.

Beak color is black depending upon the color mutation. Parson’s colors range from the normal as described below to creams and fawns. The head of a normal is a beautiful blue/gray with black streaks around the eyes giving it an almost oriental appearance. Below the beak and running down to the top of the chest is a bold black bib. The chest itself is a soft brown, and the back of the body is a rich cinnamon-brown. The abdomen and vent areas are white. The tail is black and definitely shorter than the Heck’s ending in a square. A large black patch is also present on the lower flanks. The legs are faded orange in color, depending on the mutation.

Behavior: Once, the birds have chosen their mates the bonding between them is unsurpassable. Parson pairs bond for life and a large percentage of their time is spent doting upon one another.

Size: about 4″

Breeding: Clutch sizes range from 5 to 9 making it one of the largest clutch sizes of the Australians. Incubation is usually 12 days.

DNA testing is available to ensure gender if desired for an additional fee.

The Shaft-tail finch looks very similar to a separate species called the Parson’s Finch (P. cincta), but can be differentiated from the Parson’s by the color of the bill. The Shaft-tail will have a yellow, orange, or red bill, whereas the Parson’s Finch has a black bill (exception: the creamino mutation Parson’s finch has a pink bill). The Parson’s Finch also has a shorter tail, regardless of color morph

Diet:  A good finch mix with mixed millet, fresh water, cuttlebone and grit, Australian Blend Goldenfeast. Lettuce, Spinach, Chickweed, Spray Millet, Eggfood, Broccolli tops and Carrot tops can also be offered on a regular basis.

DNA Testing

If there is no gender option listed for a bird on our website, that particular species is ‘monomorphic’, which means we’re unable to determine gender without purchasing DNA testing. DNA testing is an additional $149 per bird to guarantee preferred gender. DNA testing may add an additional 3-6 plus weeks to estimated delivery time to allow for gender results. See our FAQs for more info.
